Team

All three founders of Crosswind obtained mechanical engineering degrees while attending the University of British Columbia in the early 2000’s. Since their formal studies, the founders have developed complimentary skill sets through varied experience in industry and academia.

Mike Tattersfield

Mike Tattersfield (President)

Mike has significant project management and operations experience with strengths in managing timelines and relationships, and in implementing real world solutions. Mike’s previous roles include directing international engineering studies to assess coal power plant fuel delivery systems, and working as the Maintenance Superintendent at a large aggregate mining operation. Mike is a registered Professional Engineer in British Columbia.

Joel Atwater (Vice President)

Joel brings significant renewable energy expertise to the organization. In addition to his participation in Crosswind, Joel is PhD-ABD at UBC evaluating the potential contribution of tidal power in BC’s energy mix. He also provides the organization with a unique ‘utility’ perspective through experience as a NSERC Industrial Research Scholar with BC Hydro. Joel is a registered Professional Engineer in British Columbia.

Corey Houle - Technical Director

Corey Houle (Technical Director)

Corey also serves as the Project Leader for the SwissKitePower (SKP) organization and has been an active participant in the airborne wind industry for several years. Before launching the SwissKitePower project, he was instrumental in the development of a handheld nanoparticle detection unit that is now produced as a commercial product. Corey has also worked as a test engineer with engine developer Westport Innovations.

Technical Staff

Crosswind has assembled a capable technical team with the necessary skill sets to develop and commercially deploy our airborne wind energy technology. In addition to the founders, Crosswind’s technical team includes the following personnel:

Dr Frédéric Bourgault (Controls Development) completed postdoctoral research studies at Cornell University after receiving his Ph.D. in Field Robotics from the University of Sydney, a M.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and a B.Eng. in Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering from Ecole Polytechnique de Montréal. He also attended the International Space University (ISU).  Dr. Bourgault was a senior scientist and research fellow at the Institute for Dynamic Systems and Control at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich. He is an internationally recognized scholar and researcher in the field of robotics and autonomous systems and has published extensively in the fields of sensor fusion, estimations, controls and dynamics. Prior to joining Crosswind Power, he was developing autonomous airborne wind energy systems at Joby Energy in Santa Cruz, CA.

Fred Mason (Control Systems Developer) has been involved with Industrial Automation since 1985 and has been involved in numerous engineering projects involving new sites or instrument upgrades. Recently, he has been involved with several IPP run-of-river projects on the Sunshine Coast including McNair Creek Hydro at Port Mellon and Tyson Creek site at the top of Narrows Inlet.

Derek Richards (Mechanical Systems Developer) holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering from UBC. Derek also holds mechanical engineering technology diplomas from BCIT in the areas of mechanical design and manufacturing. Prior to joining Crosswind, he worked as a mechanical designer with Nexterra, a local developer of biomass gasification systems.

Advisors

Mark Dance has spent the past 20 years in the Vancouver high-tech community. For 11 of those years, he was at Creo Inc., where he played central roles in growing the company from 10M$US in revenue to over 700M$US in revenue, and from 100 people to more than 4,000 people world-wide. His roles included president, COO, and CFO. Since Creo’s sale to Eastman Kodak Company in 2005, Mr. Dance helps tech companies in areas as diverse as business strategy, distribution and partnerships, IP protection, financing, pricing and product strategy and organization and operations. He has also lectured undergraduate engineering classes on business, economics, and product management to help groom the technology entrepreneurs of tomorrow. Mr. Dance has a Bachelor of Applied Science (Honours) degree in Mechanical Engineering from UBC and holds numerous patents on medical robotic devices.

Dr Hadi Dowlatabadi is a Canada Research Chair in Applied Mathematics and Global Change at UBC, and the Associate Director of UBC’s Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability. He is co-founder of Offsetters.ca and Green-Erg.com, organizations devoted to meeting the climate challenge through energy innovations.  For more about Hadi’s background, please visit www.ires.ubc.ca/hadi and www.green-erg.com

Iain McLean (MBA, BSc (Eng), MIMMM.) is currently Vice President North American Region for Gemcom Software based in Vancouver BC. Formerly Chief Operating Officer for Vertical Wind Energy a company developing and marketing turbines for the small wind market in the UK and Ireland and Managing Director Econnect Ventures developing power management solutions for the Renewable Energy industry in the UK. Iain holds a degree in Mining Engineering from Imperial College London and an MBA from the Harvard Business School.

Peter Schober (Electrical Engineer) has several decades of experience in power generation and distribution.  Peter has worked for a wide variety of clients in the fields of pulp & paper, mining and hydropower generation.  Peter is the founder of Renewable Power Corporation, builders of several IPP projects on the Sunshine Coast.  He has also acted as engineer for several other hydro generation projects, including Sechelt Creek and Malibu.
